JOHN
IVERSON (class of '66)
Of course, in recently checking out the SCHS website, I
had to visit the portion having to do with the marching
band!! I was so pleased to learn of the success achieved
by the Band. I was especially

interested
in the strict requirements demanded of any new drum major.
I am afraid that I was chosen to be the first drum major
because I was tall, tended to follow directions, and my
tenor sax would not be missed while marching!
In
the early 1960's, there was both a concert band and an orchestra.
The orchestra was led by Mr. Robbins and Mr. Shofner took
over the concert band. On special occasions, such
as graduation and spring concert, the two groups would combine.
Mr.
Shofner, who primarily taught Spanish probably made a mistake
by pointing out to (the) Administration that he had previously
led marching bands at other schools and our then new high
school should have a marching band. He got the dubious
honor of putting together the first marching band.
Although
Mr. Shofner had prior experience, the volunteers and draftees
for the marching band had none. We spent many hours
practicing in the parking lot and driveway of the school
in the early mornings. We eventually marched at high
times of football games and, during the next two years that
I was a student there, participated in several Orange
County parades. We also put in many hours of extra
work earning money for new uniforms in 1966.
Anyway,
I owe a debt to Mr. Shofner for exposing me to the work
and the sweat and the rewards of being the first Drum Major
of the San Clemente High School Marching Band and I thought
I would let you know of that and further that the history
of the Band does indeed extend back into the dark ages of
the 1960's.
