General Rules
Members of the Instrumental Music & Pageantry program are team members. The following general rules are enforced to maintain the ensemble's team or group atmosphere.
BEHAVIOR
All school rules are in effect at all times. Some of these rules are reiterated in the bullet points below.
Members that are ensemble team musicians allow other musicians to learn in the classroom.
Members act and dress in a professional manner when representing San Clemente HS. Uniforms for marching band or the concert ensembles will be worn correctly at all times (zipped up, put together, all clothes on, etc.)
Inappropriate language is not a "sport". Do not use it.
School owned equipment is loaned out free of charge. It is your responsibility to repair any damage you cause.
Students will not play another student's instrument. Using another student's instrument is theft.
Individuals find the way to benefit the ensemble, and the ensemble team benefits from their continuous efforts.
LOCKERS
Lockers are for the storage of musical instruments. If you choose to use your locker for other things, it must remain organized and clean.
Do not store food in your locker.
You must provide your own lock and a duplicate key or combination to the director.
Combinations for the lockers are available from Mr. Jackson.
The school is not responsible for theft from an unlocked locker.
EQUIPMENT
School equipment must be stored correctly when you leave the room. If you do not have time to store it correctly, Mr. Jackson will issue you a pass to class so that you are able to store your equipment in the proper place.
School equipment that is left out or generally mistreated, or not maintained properly, will be repossessed.
Equipment is issued to the first student asking for the instrument. Some instruments are limited.
UNIFORMS/CONCERT CLOTHES
Triton Marching Alliance students are issued a uniform owned by CUSD and/or TMAC. The students and their family are responsible for proper storage after each event. Uniforms are checked out to you clean, and students are required to clean the uniform when it is dirty. Uniforms must be returned properly stored with the cleaning receipt attached. Students are to wear their uniforms properly at all times. Do not walk around with parts unfastened.
Concert Ensemble members wear traditional black performance attire. WOMEN: Black dress (calf length or longer, shoulders covered), black shoes, or black slacks and black blouse (not white). MEN: Black formal tuxedo look (including black shoes, socks, pants, bow tie), and a white dress shirt (tuxedo shirt recommended) (Note: a tuxedo jacket is not required). Students are to wear their clothes correctly when participating with the ensemble. Students are required to wear their clothes properly and professionally at all times.
In all cases, students that are not ensemble team members will loose performance and travel privileges. It is a reasonable expectation of every student at San Clemente HS to dress appropriately (and professionally when required), demonstrate mature behavior in the classroom and when representing SCHS in public, take proper care of equipment, and to demonstrate respect for the other ensemble team members. Individuals that choose not to do demonstrate these basic character traits do not "fit in" the music department.
Responsibilities
The following list of responsibilities has been a part of the music handbook for many years. Most of the responsibilities are included in the rules above, but are stated in a different manner here. The content is important, and rather than list a hundred rules above, the description of responsibilities covers all concepts of professional ensemble behavior.
RESPONSIBILITY
TO THE SCHOOL
The
school district provides the facility and some of the cost of the uniforms and
equipment necessary for the development of a music program.
The Music Boosters (Triton Music Arts Club or TMAC) provide support and
encouragement as well as being responsible for fund-raising and other activities
and functions. As students of the SCHS Music Program, you are a
representative of the SCHS student body and the community as a whole.
Your good citizenship and behavior represent not only your school but
also the Capistrano Unified School District and the city of San Clemente.
You
have the obligation to respect the rights and feelings of others, both in and
out of uniform, and to treat everyone as you would wish to be treated.
Your effort affects the other members, and a superior effort from you
will honor their efforts as well.
Promptness,
commitment, effort, and attendance are essential elements to the success of the
Band, Orchestra, andPageantry. Schedules
of rehearsals and performances are announced and/or posted.
Please arrange your schedule to fulfill your obligation.
Attendance at all regularly scheduled rehearsals and performances is
mandatory, and attendance/participation is a graded class assignment for every
ensemble.
If
you are issued a school instrument, you accept responsibility for maintaining it
and take all precautions to see that the instrument is returned to the school in
good condition.
Musical
excellence on the part of individuals affects the performances of the total Band
and Orchestra. Private instruction
during the year is strongly suggested for all music students by the director.
Lessons may be paid for out of a student's TMAC account.
There
are numerous costs associated with running a quality music program.
Money must be raised to pay for expenses such as music, instruments,
instrument repairs, clinicians, transportation and uniform maintenance, etc.
Not only are there yearly recurring expenses necessary to maintain the
basic music program, but there are occasional special events in which our groups
are invited to perform. In those
cases additional fund-raising efforts are necessary.
Every student is encouraged to earn all or part of their ensemble fees
through the fundraisers provided by TMAC.
