LEVEL REQUIREMENTS

There are two levels of music certificate study - Standard Level and higher Level.  IB Music students must complete specific requirements for an IB Music Certificate, leading to their IB Diploma upon graduation.

 

 

Standard level

Students are required to submit the following work to be considered for a Standard Level IB Music Certificate.  All certificate work is applied to the overall IB Diploma requirements.

  • Listening Paper (the IB Exam) - There are 5 musical extracts and 5 compulsory questions graded on your musical perception and your analysis or the prescribed work (one question) and four other pieces.  This test is usually 2.5 hours long.

  • Music Investigation (Media Format) - 1200-1500 word investigation of the relationships between two musical cultures (genres)

  • Group Performance Recording or Composition

 

Higher Level

Students are required to submit the following work to be considered for a Higher Level IB Music Certificate. All certificate work is applied to the overall IB Diploma requirements.

  • Listening Paper (the IB Exam) - There are 5 musical extracts and 5 compulsory questions graded on your musical perception and your analysis or the prescribed work (one question) and four other pieces.  This test is usually 2.5 hours long.

  • Music Investigation (Media Format) - 1200-1500 word investigation of the relationships between two musical cultures (genres)

  • Solo Performance Recording - Presentation of one or more solo recital pieces not exceeding 20 minutes.

  • Composition - three contrasting compositions (5-15 minutes total performance time) accompanied by a written statement detailing the compositional process.
