COMPOSITION LIST

Composition 1 - Tone Row (basic)

  • Due block day

  • Composition: One original melody with the following treatments: melodic inversion, melodic retrograde, rhythmic diminution, and rhythmic augmentation

  • Label each compositional device clearly labeled.

  • You may read additional sources on tone rows, serial music, and 12 tone techniques, but this exercise does not address the minutia for this type of music.

  • This assignment is not "art".  It is like a math problem in that you need to work to demonstrate you understand the compositional techniques listed above.  By understanding these basic compositional techniques, you will be able to recognize them during music analysis and use them while composing.

Composition 2 - Imitative

  • Composition: A cannon or other imitative piece of music

  • Compose three parts for an ensemble of similar instruments (i.e. two violins and a cello, or three trumpets, etc)

  • Composition 2 must be performed in class.  Individual parts may need to be provided.

  • Label each compositional device used (canon, augmentation of the canon, etc.)

Composition 3 - Fanfare

  • Composition: Fanfare for brass instruments.  One minute in length.

  • Composition 3 must be played and recorded in class.

  • Label each compositional device used (canon, augmentation, inversion, etc.)

Composition 4  - Concerto

  • Composition: Concerto for a solo instrument with small ensemble accompaniment.

  • Three minutes in length.

  • Composition 4 must be played and recorded in class.

  • The ensemble parts and form should use a standard form reviewed in class.  If you wish to use non-standard compositional techniques, instrumentation, etc., make an appointment and obtain approval from the teacher.

  • Label each compositional device used (canon, augmentation, inversion, etc.)

NOTE:

  • Music staff paper can be printed from the link in the gray navigation box above.

  • Finale Notepad program downloads are available and encouraged.  IB requires the use of technology in the creation of the higher level compositions.
