Composition: One original melody with the following
treatments: melodic inversion, melodic retrograde, rhythmic
diminution, and rhythmic augmentation
Label each compositional device clearly labeled.
You may read additional sources on tone rows, serial
music, and 12 tone techniques, but this exercise does
not address the minutia for this type of music.
This assignment is not "art". It is
like a math problem in that you need to work to demonstrate
you understand the compositional techniques listed above.
By understanding these basic compositional techniques,
you will be able to recognize them during music analysis
and use them while composing.

2 - Imitative
Composition: A cannon or other imitative piece of music
Compose three parts for an ensemble of similar instruments
(i.e. two violins and a cello, or three trumpets, etc)
Composition 2 must be performed in class. Individual
parts may need to be provided.
Label each compositional device used (canon, augmentation
of the canon, etc.)

3 - Fanfare
Composition: Fanfare for brass instruments. One
minute in length.
Composition 3 must be played and recorded in class.
Label each compositional device used (canon, augmentation,
inversion, etc.)
Composition
4 - Concerto
Composition: Concerto for a solo instrument with small
ensemble accompaniment.
Three minutes in length.
Composition 4 must be played and recorded in class.
The ensemble parts and form should use a standard form
reviewed in class. If you wish to use non-standard
compositional techniques, instrumentation, etc., make
an appointment and obtain approval from the teacher.

NOTE:
